The recipient of a bachelor's degree in psychology, Martin Harssema, MD, earned a doctor of medicine in 2000 and subsequently completed a one-year general surgery internship at Wilford Hall Medical Center. Over the course of more than a dozen years with the US Air Force, Martin Harssema, MD, has continued to expand his education. He completed a three-year anesthesiology residency at the University of Florida in 2009 and passed the American Board of Anesthesiology oral and written exams on his first attempt. He also has certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.


During his time with the Air Force, Martin Harssema, MD, completed courses on aerospace medicine, global medicine, and combat casualty care, among others. Dr. Harssema began his career as a flight surgeon and aviation mishap specialist for the 335th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Wing of the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina, and upon completing his anesthesiology residency, he served as a staff anesthesiologist at the Malcolm Grow Medical Clinic and Surgical Center at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.


Beyond his primary positions, Dr. Harssema has been deployed to Kuwait, Qatar, Afghanistan, and South Korea. A member of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, he has earned multiple commendation and achievement medals from the Air Force and received a letter of Congressional appreciation from former Georgia representative Jack Kingston.
