Dr. William De La Peña Earns Attention of National Governments

An authority in the field of ophthalmology, Dr. William De La Peña has served as a medical practitioner, educator, and business leader in the Los Angeles area and has been asked at times to help in ophthalmology for national governments, Universities and Ophthalmological societies . Dr. De La Peña's service to the United States includes a role as special delegate to the United Nations in 2002, serving as a surrogate to George W. Bush during his presidential campaign, and sitting on the Board of Regents for the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, where he received the civilian Distinguished Service Medal. As a member of the Board of Regents for the University of California, and newly appointed to the Board of Governors of both Los Alamos National Security and Lawrence Livermore National Security, Dr. William De La Peña assists in providing oversight for two of the United States' national security science laboratories.


Dr. William De La Peña has likewise impacted the development of ophthalmology throughout Latin America, traveling to train over 2,000 doctors in new surgical techniques and offering the support of his nonprofit Fundación Oftalmológica De La Peña. He belongs or has an Honorary membership to several ophthalmology societies, including those in the U.S., Spain, Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Brazil, and has served the Costa Rican government as a medical advisor.
